Ellis at DT this year?

Lonestar's picture

Was listening to the Ranch report today. Rumor has it that they are thinking about moving our newly drafted Spencer to a hand down defensive end and moving Ellis to defensive tackle. They will also be moving Bobby Carpenter to LB. Ellis is supposidly not thrilled about "another" position change but he also realizes that after an achilles injury he has something to prove and doesn't have much leverage right now. I'll keep you all posted.

all this talk of moving ellis is going to give him brain freeze..give the guy a break..seems like every year a new savior in the defensive line is drafted and then, when the new savior is exposed as a fraud,we move ellis back to his strength[rushing the passer]..when will they learn?

I Agree! Ellis is a monster at rushing the passer - he has the strength, speed and moves to strike constant fear for the offense. Let the man play and rush the passer like Haley used to!

I seem to recall they talked about doing this a couple of years ago - you guys remember that? Even in a 4-3 I'm not sure how much sense it makes - Ellis just doesn't have the size. Unless the reasoning is that in a nickel, Ellis, Ware and Spencer give you three headhunters as down linemen in passing situations, and of the three, Ellis is the slowest, so put him in the middle?

Dan I did forget to mention that this would be in the nickel package...thanks for pointing that out. Obviously he is no noseguard..he'd get crushed! Thanks for catchin' my back brother.

Are we still running a 3-4 defense? If so, there really is no DT right but just a NG and if that is the case Ellis is way too small. If we are only talking nickel 4-3 here, if he adds some bulk he could be a good one but I will miss him coming off the end. I would give both he and Spencer a fair shot at that DE spot in the nickel before moving Ellis but that is just me. Spencer will get plenty of snaps in the 3-4 and 4-3 so I am not worried there...
